The ghost woman of Picerno Bridge: A true Italian horror story

The Picerno Bridge is not famous but it should be.

It sits on the Raccordo Autostradale Sicignano-Potenza, the RA5, a stretch of road that cuts through the Appennino Lucano and connects the A3 motorway to Potenza. If you grew up in Basilicata, you know it.

The bridge is tall, dramatically tall, and the mountain fog collects in the tunnels on either side… and it’s very dark.

Over the years, the Picerno Bridge (officially named as Fiumara di Tito) has been in the local news for suicides and accidents. The kind of accumulation that turns a piece of infrastructure into something paranomal.

And then there is the other story.

People around there still talk about a couple driving back from a small restaurant late one night, easing their way onto the bridge when something made them slam the brakes. There, in the middle of the road, they both swore they saw a woman, missing a limb, just standing and watching their car crawl closer. Then, without a sound, she suddenly hurled herself beneath the front bumper, only for them to jump out and find nothing at all, no body, no marks on the asphalt, just the quiet river below.

I grew up in Potenza. I drove that road a hundred times and I never felt safe.

But here’s another story.

One night, very late, I was coming back home. At the end of the tunnel before the bridge, there was a figure in white. Just there.

He was a worker who was painting the center lines…

Anyway that night on the bridge didn’t leave me. It remained imprinted in my memories.

She Never Got Home is the track I made for her.

I don’t know who she was and what happened to her but she was white, she was still, and she never got home.

The track comes out October 16th.
